A tribunal here on Tuesday sentenced five people, including two women, to life imprisonment for kidnapping a minor girl from the city in January this year for ransom.
The convicts are Rahima Begum, Rokhsana, Jalal Uddin, Karim Dakat and Mamunur Rashid. Of them, the former four were tried in absentia.
Judge Md Rezaul Karim Chowdhury of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal also fined the convicts Tk 50,000 each.
The tribunal acquitted another accused, Nurul Bashar, as the allegation brought against him could not be proved.
According to the prosecution, Faria Afrin Oishee, 5, daughter of M Zahed Hossain of Chandgaon Residential in the port city, was kidnapped from in front of their house on January 27 this year.
The kidnappers took her to a house at Khutukkhali in Banshkhali upazila and demanded Tk 5 lakh to her father as ransom for releasing the minor girl.
Following a complaint, police rescued the girl from the house of Rahima at Khutukkhali on February 2.
Victim’s father filed a kidnapping case with Chandgaon Police Station on February 3.
