Each of 46,087 fishermen of the district will get 40 kg of rice during the 65-day ban period on fishing imposed by the government.
District fisheries office sources said there are 48,393 listed fishermen in the district, but there are more 50,000 fishermen who are out of the list. As a result, a huge number of fishermen will remain out of the incentive.
Meanwhile, district administration has taken steps to help the fishermen who are being deprived of the facility.
District administration sources said they applied to the concerned ministry asking for allocation of rice. Following this, the ministry allocated 1,843 metric tons of rice under Vulnerable Group Feeding (VGF) programme for the fishermen of the district.
Of the beneficiaries, 7,095 will get the rice in Cox’s Bazar Sadar, 3,849 in Chakaria, 11,422 in Maheshkhali, 3,399 in Ukhia, 3,949 in Pekua, 8,513 in Kutubdia, and 7,860 in Teknaf upazilas.
Upper Division Assistant of Relief and Rehabilitation Unit of the district administration Md Sirajul Islam said the allocated rice has already reached. Now, it will be sent to respective upazila nirbahi officers for distribution among the fishermen.
While talked, some fishermen said there are over 1 lakh fishermen in the district, but only half of them will get the allocation.
They urged the authority concerned to allocate the incentives for all fishermen.
Additional Deputy Commissioner (Revenue) Mohammad Ashraful Afsar said, “We have taken steps to allocate rice for all, not for listed ones only. At least 25 per cent of the rice and other incentives meant for Rohingyas are to be distributed for locals too. These 25 per cent incentives will be distributed among the fishermen soon. In the meantime, we have distributed the incentives among about 4,000 fishermen in Kutubdia and Maheshkhali upazilas.”
It may be mentioned here that due to the ban, fishermen cannot catch fish from the Naf River for long. As a result, they are going through hardship along with their families. Meanwhile, the administration has hinted over solution to the problem.
ADC Mohammad Ashraful Afsar said the ban on fishing from the Naf River will be withdrawn soon.
DC Md Kamal Hossen said, “We have taken steps for all. We hope that nobody will remain out of the incentives.”
