Chattogram Bureau :
Contraband imported poppy seeds have arrived in Chittagong port from Malaysia in a consignment declared mustard seeds. Poppy is commonly cultivated illegally in the hilly areas of the country to make opium. Chittagong Custom House was able to seize the consignment on the basis of secret information.
According to sources, Ajmin Trade Center, an importer from Old Dhaka, imported two containers of mustard seeds from Malaysia. Their nominated C&F agent Hotline Cargo International submitted the Bill of Entry (Number: C65160) to the Chittagong Custom House on 16 April as per the rules to unload the consignment. At the same time, the declared product pays 1 lakh 42 thousand 498 taka as mustard seed duty.
After paying the duty, the C&F agent started the process of unloading the goods. But the Customs House Audit, Investigation and Research (AIR) team suspended the release process on the basis of secret information. Subsequent to 100 per cent physical examination, 12 tons of mustard seeds and 42 tons of imported banned poppy seeds (poppy seeds) were found in place of the 54 tons of mustard seeds declared by the importer in the LC.
