Four suspected robbers were beaten to death by a mob at Chowdhurydangi village in Sadar upazila early Saturday. The identities of the deceased could not be known yet. Tuhin Mandal, chairman of Charmadhabdia union parishad, said a gang of robbers, numbering 8-10, swooped on the area under Charmadhabdia union around 3 am and looted valuables from three houses after keeping the house inmates hostage at gunpoint. Being resisted, the robbers also hit three people with sharp weapons, leaving them critically injured. Hearing screams of the victims and sensing the presence of the robbers, local people made an announcement through loudspeaker of the local mosque around 4 am. At one stage, the local people chased off the robbers and managed to catch four of them. Later, the villagers gave them a good thrashing, leaving them dead on the spot. Seven villagers were injured by the robbers, said the chairman. On information, police recovered the bodies and sent those to a local hospital morgue for autopsy, said Nazimuddin, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station. Police also recovered a firearm and a mobile phone set from near the bodies.
