Local government, Rural Development and Cooperatives (LGRD) Minister Tajul Islam has said that the government has taken initiative to decontaminate city’s four polluted river water and Chattogram Karnafuli River.
A total 39 canals in Dhaka would also be rescued in step by step, the minister said.
He was speaking at the signing ceremony of a master plan for the protection
of the Meghna River.
The program was held in city’s Sonargaon hotel on Saturday morning.
The agreement was signed to prevent pollution and encroachment on the Meghna River. The treaty was signed with the local government and two organizations working with the river.
The two organizations will inform the local government about the measures to be taken to prevent pollution and to stop the grabbing of the river and the canel in the 18-month long project. Later action will be taken according to their instructions. Dhaka WASA, however, will assist the Ministry of Local Government as the focal body in this project.
Meanwhile, earlier, Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Sheikh Fazle Nur Taposh had said that no more establishments’ installation would be built near the canal boundary of the capital city.
At the same time, the boundaries of the canal will be determined by measuring according to the records, DSCC Mayor said.
On the other hand, Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Atiqul Islam has also said that the canals of Dhaka North City will be rescued and boundary pillars will be installed after preserving these.
No matter how powerful a person is all out efforts would be taken to achieve the mission. The canels will be freed somehow, DNCC mayor added.
It is mentionable that many multi-storied buildings and establishments on the bank of the Buriganga River are being demolished everyday as part of eviction drive of BIWTA.
