As many as 3,02,904 government jobs are lying vacant even as the number of unemployed is on the rise in Bangladesh.
The figure is 18 percent of the total government jobs.
Of the vacancies, 39,564 are grade-I posts, 30,422 grade-II, 163,417 are grade-III and 69,501 are grade-IV posts.
Public administration ministry officials blame a lack of initiative by the relevant ministries.
But, Senior Secretary to the Ministry of Public Administration Kamal Abdul Naser Chowdhury thinks there is never 100 percent recruitment in government jobs.
However, he said some initiative was being taken to fill the vacant posts.
Presently, there are 1,375,438 government employees against 1,678,342 approved posts. Of them 26.9 percent are female.
The figures were found after analysing the Ministry of Public Administration’s data for the month of December.
As per the statistics, 3,120 posts are lying vacant with the ministries and departments while 198,016 posts are vacant in directorates.
In the offices of divisional commissioners and deputy Commissioners 10,449 posts are vacant. In autonomous institutions and corporations there are 91,419 vacancies.
Against 179,381 grade-I posts, there are 139,817 employees.
In grade-II, there are only 142,763 employees against 173,185 posts. In grade-III, only 838,992 posts are filled against 1,002,409 posts. As against 323,367 grade-IV posts there are only 253,866 employees.
There are 370,581 female employees. Of them 23,637 are grade-I staff; 53,041 grade-II; 246,812 are grade-III and 47,091 are grade-IV employees.
The Bangladesh Public Service Commission recruits grade-I and grade-II employees while ministries directly employ grade-II and grade-IV employees.
“There are many government departments and there are always employees going on retirement while new recruitments are done. But not all the posts are ever filled,” Naser Chowdhury told bdnews24.com.
“The government always tries to ensure that no post remains vacant for long,” he added.
Stating that quota-based posts were mostly lying vacant, he said ministries have been instructed to fill them.
Failing to get suitable candidates from different quotas, the government conducted special BCS examinations.
Various ministries recently advertised for recruitment under the freedom fighters reservation quota.
The retirement age of government employees has been increased from 57 to 59 with effect from Dec 26, 2011.
It is because of all this that very few government employees retired in the last three years. As a result, the number of job-seekers has increased drastically.
This is evident when one sees the list of applicants in the last two BCS examinations.
