The High Court has granted bail to BNP leaders Mirza Abbas and Abdus Salam, who are now in jail, for six months. A bench of Justices Borhanuddin and KM Kamrul Kader issued the order on Wednesday following two separate bail petitions. The court also issued a rule on it. Since the two leaders get bail in all cases, they can now be released from prison, the defence counsel said. Mirza Abbas is the BNP’s standing committee member while Abdus Salam is the member secretary of the party’s Dhaka Metropolitan unit. Four cases were filed over violence and arson in Dhaka buses that caused several deaths during strikes and blockades sponsored by the BNP-led alliance last year. Mirza Abbas secured bail in all the cases. Abdus Salam, who was accused in one case, was granted bail. Earlier, they were granted bail in all these cases but on Mar 9, but the Appellate Division scrapped their bail. On Mar 16, the trial court ordered these two and Acting BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir to jail after they surrendered. – bdnews24.com
