The investigators dealing with science writer and war crimes trial campaigner Ananta Bijoy Das murder case are now looking for the three people who took part in the killing on a Sylhet street on May 12 last year.
CID Special Superintendent Mirza Abdullahel Baqui told That “Three of the six suspected killers are already in jail. We are now looking for the three other people involved in the murder. We have got their photographs and other details,”
“We will submit the charge sheet in the case once we arrest the trio,” he added.
Police Headquarters database shows that the law enforcers have already detected the motive and blames banned militant group Ansarullah Bangla Team for the murder.
One of the suspects now in jail, Mannan Yahya alias Hira alias Abdul Munim, made confessional statement in the case on September 2 last year.
A former student of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST), Rahi was a close associate of outlawed militant group Hizb-ut Tahrir leader Shafiur Rahman Farabi. They used to instigate attacks on secularists and atheists on Facebook. Police said that Rahi had four accounts on Facebook.
Five masked miscreants killed Ananta, a banker by profession, near Dastidar Dighir Par of Subid Bazar in the city when he was heading for office in the morning of May 12 last year. The killers came on a motorcycle, intercepted Ananta near his house and hacked him to death with machetes in broad daylight after chasing him.
Brother of the victim Ratneshwar Das filed the case alleging that Ananta was killed in a planned manner for his writings against religious extremists.
Newly-floated militant group al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent claimed responsibility for the murder. Ansarullah is believed to be the Bangladesh wing of the AQIS.
Writer of several books, Ananta was the editor of science magazine Jukti and general secretary of Sylhet Science and Rationalist Council. He also regularly contributed to Mukto-Mona Blog whose founder Avijit Roy had been killed in a similar machete attack on February 26 last year.
A former SUST student, Ananta was also a member of the organising body of Sylhet Gonojagoron Moncho, a youth platform established to demand capital punishment for all war criminals.
The locals have installed a monument on the murder spot to remember the contribution of Ananta in the fight against communalism and religious extremism. It is set to be inaugurated this morning.
Meanwhile, two people held over the murder – Mohaymen Noman (brother of Mannan Rahi) and Abul Khayer alias Rashid Ahmed – secured bail in the case recently. The law enforcers arrested them again after they were released from jail on May 5. Noman was arrested along with his brother on August 28 and Rashid on September 2 last year.
Photojournalist Idris Ali of the daily Sabuj Sylhet was also questioned as he took photographs of the dead body just after the killing. He later got bail as the police did not find his involvement in the murder.
However, police earlier claimed that former madrasa student Idris was an active member of a militant group and that he actively took part in the attack.
