22 fishermen jailed for violating hilsa netting ban in Barisal

Fishery department on Monday in Barisal sentenced twenty-two fishermen for violating hilsa netting ban.
The 15-day ban against hilsa fishing imposed from September 25 to boost hilsa resources by saving mother hilsa carrying egg during lying season, said Bimal Chandra Das, district fishery officer (hilsa)
Bimal Chandra informed fishery department in assistances with local administration, law enforcing agencies operating drives from Sunday night to Monday late morning detained 22 fishermen with fishing nets from the Kirtankhola, Sandhya, and Meghna Rivers under different areas of Barisal Sadar and Wazirpur upazilas.
Among them 7 were sentenced to 1-year imprisonment and 10 were fined per head Tk 2 thousand by the mobile court led by Kalyan Chowdhury, administrative magistrate of Barisal district administration on Monday afternoon.
On other hand another mobile court led by Jhumur Bala, Wazirpur upazila nirbahi officer, sentenced 2 fishermen to 1-year and 3 others to one-month imprisonment, fishery (hilsa) officer informed.
Hilsa fishing net worth Tk 20 thousand and 40 Kg netted-hilsa were seized and destroyed by order of the courts.
