Two garment workers were killed after being crushed by a truck in Mymensingh’s Bhaluka upazila on Monday.
The incident took place around 12pm when a group of workers ran for safety after the police charged batons and lobbed teargas shells to disperse the protesting workers in the area.
The deceased are Harun Ur Rashid, 34, of Crown Wears Ltd, and Jewel Mia of Square Fashions.
Bhoradoba Highway police outpost In-Charge Al Mahmud Adnan said that workers of Crown Wears Ltd were protesting closure of factories in the Jamirdia Masterbari area under Bhaluka upazila since 10am on Monday, blocking the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway When the industrial police baton-charged and fired teargas shells to disperse the intermingled workers, some of them ran away and suddenly came in front of a Dhaka-bound truck.
Noticing their sudden presence, the truck driver lost control and hit a road divider. As the driver lost control on the steering, the truck overturned and crushed the two workers, killing them instantly.
The driver was also injured and taken to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, said the police official.
Workers alleged that the Crown Wears Ltd authority shut down their factories on Monday morning without prior notice. After seeing the notice and their factories closed they started to protest by blocking the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway and demanded their salaries.
They also demanded justice for the death of their two co-workers. Factory authorities were unavailable for comment over the shutdown.
