Call to ensure toxic free fruits for consumers at district level

Speakers under the banner of Save The Environment Movement at a roundtable meeting held in the city on Friday recommended setting up of food court at the district level across the country to ensure the availability of toxic free fruits for the consumers.
Immediate implementation of ‘Safe Food Act-2013 and Formalin Control Act-2015’ along with enactment of time befitting insecticide control act also have been recommended at the meeting.
Besides, appointment of required number of food observers was also suggested at the roundtable meeting.
Noted scientists, agriculturists, farmers and officials made the recommendations for the consideration of the government immediately ahead of availability of the monsoon fruits in the country that would begin from ‘Jaistha’, middle of the next month.
The toxicities and adulteration in food and fruits already have reached an extreme level … which is making negative impact on public health, they said at the meeting titled “Toxic in seasonal fruits production, imperiled human and imperiled nature”.
People are now suffering from various long-term diseases including breathing problem, Asthma, Gastric, lever cirrhosis and cancer due to consuming chemical adulterated fruits, they added.
Former Public Service Commission Chairman Iqram Ahmed presided over the meeting while Joint General Secretary of Save the Environment Movement Dr Lenin Chowdhury deliveered the key speech at the meeting.
The roundtable also was addressed, among others, by former Chairman of Bangladesh Agriculture Research Council (BARC)Dr M Khalequzzaman Akand Chowdhury, former director of nutrition division of Bangladesh Science and Industrial Research Council (BSIRC) Dr Formujul Haq, gynecologist Dr Bilkis Begum Chowdhury, Professor of Horticulture Department of Sher-e Bangla Agriculture University Dr Nazrul Islam, Secretary of Save The Environment Movement Hasan Tarique Chowdhury and Secretary of Khelaghar Lovely Chowdhury.
