2 muggers injured in city gunfight

Two muggers were injured at Shankar, Mohammadpur on Monday when police opened fire into the private car carrying them. They were fleeing after snatching a vanity bag of a couple.
The injured persons have been identified as Saidur Rahman, 28, and Sourav, 38, jhut (garment waste) traders.
Two police constable identified as Tapan Kumar and Shah Alam have also been injured
Police also seized Tk 56,560 in cash, nine cell phone sets, two machetes, two vanity bags and a car from their possessions.
Dhanmondi Police Station’s Assistant Sub-Inspector Nawshed (ASI) said that Saidur and Sourav snatched a vanity bag from a couple at Kalabagan. They were waiting there for a bus around 6:30am. A police team chased the private car carrying the muggers on information and put up barricade at Shankar, Mohammadpur in a bid to arrest them.
At one stage, police opened fire targeting the private car, leaving Saidur and Sourav injured with bullets, he said.
They were first taken to National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedic Rehabilitation (NITOE) with bullets in their legs and later shifted to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital as their condition deteriorated, the ASI said.
He claimed that both of them are muggers. A DMCH Emergency Unit On Duty doctor said that Saurabh received a bullet in his right leg and Saidur in his left leg.
