The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) on Wednesday awarded death penalty to two war criminals for committing crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971 in Kishoreganj district.
The condemned criminals are Syed Mohammad Hussain alias Hossain, 64, and Muhammad Moslem Pradhan, 66, hailing from Nikli upazila of the district. Of them, Hussain is absconding.
The three-member panel of the tribunal, headed by Justice Anwarul Haque, handed down the verdict in the morning.
Expressing her satisfaction over the verdict, prosecutor Dr Tureen Afroz said all the six charges brought against the two war criminals in the case were proved.
On March 7, the tribunal kept the case waiting for verdict after prosecution and defence counsel completed their arguments.
Earlier, on December 3, 2015, the prosecution at the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) submitted formal charges of war crimes and violation of the Fourth Geneva Convention 1949 against the duo.
On July 7 of the same year, the now-defunct ICT-2 issued arrest warrant against them.
Police arrested Moslem the next day from his home at Kamarhati village in the upazila.
