19,000 families waterlogged in Gopalganj

Around 19,000 families still remain waterlogged due to the recent floods in five upazilas of Gopalganj.
313 villages have so far been flooded in the district, and as a result 4,000 people from about 800 families have been forced to take refuge in 103 shelters, said Senior Assistant Commissioner and Executive Magistrate Mohammad Al Maruf.
“Aman seedbed and standing Aus crops have been washed away by floodwaters. In addition, vegetable fields have also been severely damaged,” said Gopalganj Agriculture Extension Department Deputy Director Arvind Kumar Roy.
Meanwhile, Water Development Board Executive Engineer Biswajit Vaidya said that the flood situation in the district is improving as the water level in major rivers is gradually decreasing and flowing below their danger marks.
Komola Sarkar, 56, a resident of Machhpara in Kotalipara upazila, said: “My house is still submerged in floodwaters. All my fish have been washed away from the pond. The vegetables in the garden by the pond have been spoiled. I now fear for the safety of my cattle, poultry, and family. I am grateful for the assistance I received from the government.”
Kamrul Islam Babul, chairman of Ulpur union parishad under Sadar upazila, said at least 3,800 families in the union have been affected by the floods.
“Around 35km of unpaved roads in the union have been submerged in water; in addition, hundreds of fish enclosures have been washed away,” he added.
Gopalganj District Fisheries Officer Biswajit Bairagi said about 4,000 fish enclosures and ponds belonging to 5,000 fish farmers in the district were flooded.
“Meanwhile, 150 tons of rice and 2,000 packets of dry food have been distributed among the flood victims.
The district administration has allocated Tk6.9 lakh for the flood-affected people,” said Senior Assistant Commissioner and Executive Magistrate Mohammad Al Maruf.
