16.4m new poor in 2020 due to coronavirus: Survey

The impact of Covid-19 pandemic will drive 16.4 million more people in to poverty this year, said the International Chamber of Commerce, Bangladesh (ICC,B) quoting a survey by the Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS) survey.
The ICC,B quarterly, released on Thursday, also said the government’s target of achieving 8.2 per cent GDP growth in the current fiscal year will be difficult.
The ICC suggested timely implementation of the government economic programmes and noted that the various stimulus packages announced by the government and the Bangladesh Bank should be availed by the most desired.
Bangladesh economy grew by 5.24 per cent in FY20 despite COVID-19 pandemic against 2.0 per cent growth forecast by World Bank and IMF.
It said the COVID-19 is an unprecedented health and economic crisis, affecting the lives and livelihood of workers, as well as the continued operations of businesses globally.
