IU Correspondent :The authorities of Islamic University on Saturday closed the university sine die following factional clashes of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), student wing of ruling Awami League, over tenders of several construction works on the campus. At least 15 people were injured, one of them bullet-hit in the incident. The injured students were sent to Kustia Sadar Hospital and other medical centers of the district for treatment. The university authorities took the decision in an emergency meeting after the clashes. Male students have been asked to vacate their dormitories by 4:00pm on Sunday while the females by 10:00am today (Sunday).Vice-Chancellor of IU Abdul Hakim Sarker said the university was due to go on the winter vacation four days later but they have decided to shut the campus yesterday to avoid any further untoward incidents. The students and eyewitnesses said BCL’s IU unit Vice President Mizanur Rahman Mizu group and, its President Saiful Islam and General Secretary Amit Kumar group involved in clashes over tenders of several construction works on the campus. Around 200 activists from both the groups took part in the clashes with lethal weapons and arms. Later, the police rushed on the campus and brought the situation under control. Police said they had to fire in the air to disperse the warring students armed with sticks and other local weapons.Extra law enforcing agencies have been deployed on the campus to avoid further untoward incident. President Saiful Islam said Vice President Mizanur Rahman Mizu’s followers attacked on the BCL leaders and activists for no reason. Mizanur Rahman Mizu also denied the allegation and blamed the president’s followers for creating unrest situation. Earlier on Thursday, the two groups engaged in clash over the same issue that left 10 students injured.
