A Dhaka court on Tuesday placed 13 leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh and its student front Islami Chhatra Shibir on a three-day remand each in a case filed under the Explosive Substances Act.
Dhaka’s Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACMM) Mohammad Lutfur Rahman Shishir passed the order. Earlier, DB Inspector Mahfuzur Rahman, who is also Investigation Officer of the case, produced the accused, including former Jamaat MP from Khulna-5, Mia Golam Parwar and former Jamaat MP elected from Rajshahi Mujibur Rahman in the court, seeking a 10-day remand for each accused.
Different lawyers filed separate petitions seeking bail for their clients, but the court rejected those petitions.
Earlier, the 13 leaders and activists including two former Jamaat MPs were arrested from a secret meeting in the city’s Mirpur area on Monday. The Police recovered 20 crude bombs, huge sticks and Islamic books from their possessions.
Officer-in-Charge of Pallabi Police Station Dadon Fakir said that two cases were filed in this connection under the Explosive Substances Act and the Special Act on Monday night.
Talking to the reporters on Tuesday, in a press briefing at the DMP Media centre, Monirul Islam, Joint Commissioner of the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) said that the Jamaat-Shibir leaders reportedly confessed to planning for carrying out subversive activities among the worker of the readymade garment (RMG) sector ahead of Eid-ul-Azha. However, the relatives of the accused told the Media men that the leaders and activists of the party were only holding their monthly meeting.
