12 fishermen sent to jail for violating hilsa ban in Bhola

A mobile court here on Friday sentenced 12 fishermen to jail for catching hilsa fish from the Meghna river violating the ongoing ban.
Palash Haldar, a senior official of the fishery department, said a team of the department conducted a drive on the Meghna river in sadar upazila of the district and arrested 12 fishermen along with 10 kg hilsa fish and 10,000 metres of current nets early Friday.
Later the arrestees were produced before the mobile court led by executive magistrate Jafar Sardar that sent them to jail on Friday morning.
The seized hilsa fish were distributed at a local orphanage while the currents were destroyed.
The government imposed the ban from September 25 to October 9 on catching, selling and transporting hilsa in the coastal areas to ensure safe spawning of this popular fish during its peak breeding period.
