Teesta flows over danger level: 10,000 people stranded in Nilphamari flood

The Teesta has crossed the danger level again in Nilphamari. Due to heavy rains and upstream slope, water is flowing at Dalia Point of Teesta Barrage from 9 am on Thursday, 24 September, 2020 27 cm above the danger level. The water has entered the homes of about ten thousand families in 15 villages.
When the river started rising at Teesta Barrage Point in Dalia on Wednesday morning, it crossed the danger line at 6 pm. It increased further and flowed above 20 cm at 9 pm. According to the Dalia Water Development Board’s flood forecast and warning sources, the river water started rising at Teesta Barrage Point in Dalia from last Wednesday morning due to heavy rains and upstream slope. At around 3 pm, it flowed 13 cm below the danger level. At 7 pm, it crossed the danger line and flowed above 12 cm, which increased by another 6 cm at 9 pm and flowed over 20 cm.
As the Teesta water flows above the danger zone, water has entered the homes of tens of thousands of families in 15 villages including Purbachhatnai, Tepakharibari, Khalishachapani, Jhuna Gachchapani, Paschim Chhatnai Union and Jaldhakar downstream of Dimla upazila’s three unions.
Aminur Rahman, UP Chairman of Jhunagachh Chapani Union, said flood waters had entered the homes of more than 500 families in ChatunamaVendabari and Forest Char. Somewhere; the homes of these families have been submerged in water from the knees to the waist. The water continues to rise.
Moinul Haque, Chairman of Tepakharibari Union Parishad, said eight villages in his union were at risk of flooding as the Teesta water crossed the danger line. The families of these villages have been kept on alert.
Rabiaul Islam, Executive Engineer of the Dahlia Water Development Board, said the river was flowing at 26 cm above the danger level at Teesta Barrage Point at 9am on Thursday due to heavy rains and rising slopes. All the gates of the barrage have been kept open for flood control.
