More than 1,000 teachers of general education cadres under Bangladesh Civil Service deserve the status of professor designation and other facilities but unfortunately they have been waiting for the last 12 years, Education Ministry sources said.
As a result, the teachers could not concentrate in the classes as they are passing their times with severe frustration and anger.
According to the sources, a total of 1,013 teachers have been waiting to be professor since 2006 as they fulfilled all the conditions in the year. Now, only 98 posts for the professor are vacant in the country’s government honours colleges. In coming December, another 180 posts will be vacant. But it is not still sufficient to fill the gap.
The BCS 14th batch was a special batch for the teachers. A total of 1,832 qualified candidates were recommended to recruit. Of them, around 1,500 teachers had joined in the service.
The ministry officials, admitting the matter, said it is the right of the teachers to be professor but there is no adequate vacant position for them. As a result, the ministry could not award professor designation to the teachers.
Professor Mahbubur Rahman, Director General of the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education (DSHE), said, the ministry does not want to deprive the teachers from the professor designation. But, they are yet to get their promotion due to shortage of vacant positions.
“The DSHE has already submitted a proposal to the Education Ministry to create 12,500 new posts for the teachers. Everything will be resolved after the ministry’s initiative,” he hoped.
An official of the Education Ministry wishing anonymity told The New Nation that the ministry has completed its preparation to hold the meeting of the promotion committee headed by the ministry’s Secondary and the Higher Education Division’s Secretary. Some good news will come to the light soon, he said.
But the teachers said that the vacant seat is not problem for their promotion. It is the matter of the ministry’s desire.
They also blamed that the authorities concern have been passing unnecessary times to create around 12,500 new posts of professors for the government colleges across the country.
Samiul Bashir, a curriculum specialist of the National Curriculum and Textbook Board, said, most of the teachers were promoted as associate professor in 2006. According to the service rules, only two years experience as an associate professor is needed for promotion as professor.
Although they have waiting for the status since 2006, the authorities are yet not taking any step in this regard. It is unexpected, he said.
Professor Dr. Md. Sanaullah, an associate professor of Rajshahi Teachers Training College, told this correspondent that the teachers waited for long time. They will lose their patience if the government delays to realise the teachers’ right.
