More than 100 shanties were gutted in a fire that broke out at Sattola slum adjacent to Ananda Nagar Market in the city’s Mohakhali area on Sunday night.
However, the cause of the fire and the extent of damage could not be known immediately, said Fire Service and Civil Defense (FSCD) official.
On information, 13 fire fighting units rushed to the spot and brought the blaze under control around 2:15am which broke out earlier at midnight, said FSCD Headquarters Control Room Duty Officer Ataur Rahman. Most of the slum dwellers were asleep when the incident occurred, but there was no report of casualties, he said.
The reason of fire believed is electric short circuit or some cooking stoves may be responsible for it, according to him.
Most of the residences of the slum however, could not protect their belongings from fire, local sources said.
It may be mentioned that a massive fire at Korail, Dhaka’s largest slum located two kilometres from Sattola, had been gutted hundreds of homes on December 4.
