100 pc power to all upazilas in Rajshahi by June next

As part of the Prime Minister’s 100 percent electrification programme, a target has been set to bring all upazila areas of Rajshahi district under power supply network by the June next.
Local office of Rural Electrification Board (REB) along with its Rajshahi Pally Biddut Samity (RPBS) has adopted diversified measures to attain the target. It has also carrying out various campaign programmes among the public in general.
The RPBS has started finding out the dwelling houses still having no power supply and working relentlessly to reach the supply to their respective doorsteps.
“We are pledged bound to bring all areas in Paba and Durgapur Upazilas in the district under power supply network by this yearend,” said Engineer Mozammel Haque, General Manager of RPBS. The people still having no power supply facilities were requested fervently to submit application with their respective REB offices.
The RPBS has been providing power supply to Paba, Mohanpur, Durgapur, Tanore and Godagari Upazilas of the district since 1996 contributing a lot towards improving socio-economic, living and livelihood condition of the consumers in general.
It has, so far, commissioned 4,085 kilometers of distribution line providing power connections to 1,81,441 clients including 1,66,316 dwelling houses, 2,758 irrigation pumps, 8,085 commercial establishments, 1,059 industrial units and 3,077 charitable organizations.
Engineer Mozammel Haque said power supply is indispensable and there is no alternative of it for elevating the living and livelihood condition of the people in general besides upholding the country’s development and production.
For the reason, the present government has attached highest priority to the sector and has been implementing massive and effective projects.
RPBS has attained a neat profit worth of Taka 1.69 crore during the last 2014-15 fiscal year overcoming loss of Taka 2.04 crore incurred in the previous 2013-14 fiscal.
Since its inception in 1996, RPBS is playing a vital role in agricultural, industrial and socio-economic development of the district through providing power services, said Mozammel Haque.
It has significant and sustained impact on agricultural growth, industrialization and business and commercial activities in the rural areas. It is a consumer owned entity organized on the basic principles of co-operative for distribution of electric power to its members and operates on no loss – no profit basis for the mutual benefits of all its members.
The rural electrification programme being carried out by RPBS has acted a leap-forward in the development of socio-economic structure of rural areas in the district like other parts of the country.
