A team of the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) detained 10 gold smugglers from different places in the capital on Monday night.The detainees are Nazrul Islam Liton, 33, Ekramul Huq Parvez, 51, Mizanur Rahman Ripon, 32, Abul Hossain Shumon, 33, Wasim Kumar Shinha, 37, Abdul Kader, 33, Anisur Rahman, 34, Babul Poddar, 54, Abul Mannan Bhuiyan, 41, and Jahidur Rahman, 35.Abu Yusuf, Assistant Commissioner of DMP’s Media and Public Relations Affairs confirmed the matter.He said that the law enforcers held 10 smugglers with 70 gold bars, worth 35 lakh, Bangladeshi taka and five thousand Saudi Riyal.An official of the DB also demanded to have arrested the ringleader of a gold smuggling syndicate operating in Singapore, Malaysia, Dubai, India and Bangladesh. The arrest of smugglers, who were scheduled to fly for Malaysia on Sunday evening, led to the arrest of the alleged leader Nazrul Islam Liton from a house in Purana Paltan a day later with 70 gold bars, Tk three lakh in cash, and 5,000 Saudi riyals. DB Joint Commissioner Monirul Islam said it in a press briefing at DMP’s media centre that Liton used to purchase gold bars in Dubai and Singapore for sending those to Bangladesh for smuggling to India.A Dhaka court yesterday placed ten alleged gold smugglers on a four-day remand each. They were arrested on Monday from Purana Paltan in the capital and Hajrat Shahjalal International Airport.Senior Assistant Police Commissioner SM Nazmul Haque produced the accused to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court of Dhaka and sought a ten-day remand each to quiz them about the gold smuggling. Metropolitan Magistrate Emdadul Haque granted the remand after hearing.The accused persons are: Iqramul Haque Parvez, Mizanur Rahman, Abul Hossain, Ashim Kumar Saha, Abdul Kader, Anisur Rahman, Babul Poddar, Abdul Hannan, Zahidur Rahman and Nazrul Islam Liton.On the day police raided the house of Nazrul Islam at 27 Purana Paltan and recovered 70 golden bars weighing eight kilograms. Later, following his confession, other accused were nabbed from the airport.
