Targeting huge tourists coming to the district, at least 10 factories in the district town are making adulterated pickle.
With the label of Burmese product, the pickle is being marketed at and sold from different shops in the town. Even fake product number of Bangladesh Standard and Testing Institute (BSTI) is also being used.
Meanwhile, Sadar Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) and Executive Magistrate Nazim Uddin conducted a raid at a fake pickle factory in Kalatoly area of the town recently and seized huge adulterated pickle with Burmese labels. Later, the seized items were burnt and destroyed.
Magistrate Nazim Uddin said, “I never thought that pickle was being made in such an unhygienic environment. The tourists are taking this pickle and are becoming sick. This pickle is made with rotten plum, chemicals harmful for human body, molasses, sugar, artificial colour and different harmful elements and then packed with fake labels and marketed in different shops. Sometimes, fake BSTI numbers are used to fool the administration. Bypassing the administrative monitoring, many pickle factories have been set up in the town.”
He further said, “We did not find anybody while raiding the factory.
The factory people might have fled away sensing our presence.
There are many such factories in the town. We will raid all the factories and bust those very soon.”
While investigating, it was known that two persons- Jasim and Sharif are controlling this fake pickle business.
Under their leadership, many fake pickle factories have been set up in the town. From these factories, the adulterated pickle is supplied to more than 200 big and small shops in the town. To keep their business going, they bribe around Tk 3 lakh to local terrorist gangs. As a result, the concerned administration is not taking any steps against them.
While asked, Assistant Director of the Department of Consumers Rights Protection, district office, Md Sultan Mahmud Milon said, “Targeting the tourists, a gang is making the adulterated pickle in the town.
They conduct the business from different secret places. Recently, a drive was conducted at two shops selling adulterated pickle at Borobazar are of the town, and fined Tk 40,000. We will conduct drives at all shops by turns.”
