A court here on Wednesday sentenced a man to death and five others to life term imprisonment for killing a microbus driver in 2008.
The condemned convict was identified as Zinnat Hossain alias Jewel, 33, son of Khairuzzaman Khoka, while the lifers were identified as Sohel Rana, 19, Samsul Alam alias Pintu, 30, Tojam, 40, Mehedi Hasan alais Rana, 29, and Manik alias Malek, 33, of Sariakandi upazila.
All of them were tried in absentia.
The court also fined them Tk20,000 each in default to suffer six months more of rigorous imprisonment.
According to the prosecution, 8-10 young men hired a microbus of Sohel Rana, son of Afzal Hossain of Dakurchok in Sadar upazila, to go to Dhaka on February 3, 2008.
When the microbus reached Ghughumari area in Sariakandi upazila, the young men killed the driver and left the body with the vehicle there.
Biplab Sardar, brother of the victim, filed a case with Sadar Police Station.
Police submitted charge sheet against six people on November 29, 2008.
After examining records and witnesses, Additional District and Sessions Judge Mohammad Hafizur Rahman handed down the verdict.
