The visiting Zimbabwe scored 236 runs for the loss of five wickets in the first innings against Bangladesh on the first day of the first cricket Test at Sylhet International Cricket Stadium in Sylhet on Saturday.
Zimbabwe had a modest start as opener Brian Chari (13) was cleanly bowled out by left-arm spinner Taijul Islam when the tourists’ score was 35.
After Brian’s dismissal, Brendan Taylor came to the crease, but he could not
settle as he (6) was caught at the short-leg by Nazmul Hossain Shanto off Taijul Islam when the visitors’ total was 47 for the loss of two wickets.
Then Hamilton Masakadza and Sean Williams added together 38 runs for the third wicket partnership before Hamilton was trapped leg before wicket by Abu Jayed when the tourists’ score was 85 for the loss of three wickets.
Hamilton knocked a patient 52. His 105-ball innings had four fours and two sixes. It was his 8th Test half century.
After Hamilton’s departure, Sean Williams and Sikandar Raza contributed together 44 runs for the fourth wicket partnership before Raza (19) was bowled out by Nazmul Islam Apu when Zimbawe’s total was 129 for the loss of four wickets.
After Raza’s removal, Williams and Peter Moor put on together 72 runs for the fifth wicket stand before Williams was caught at the first slip by Mehidy Hasan Miraz off Mahmudullah Riyad when Zimbabwe’s score was 201 for the loss of five wickets.
Williams notched up the day’s highest 88 runs. He hit nine fours in his 173-ball patient innings. It was Sean’s 2nd Test half century.
Later, Peter Moor and Regis Chakabva added together 35 runs for the unbroken sixth wicket partnership.
Moor was on 37, while Chakabva was on 20 before the two umpires drew the bails for the first day.
Taijul Islam bagged a pair of wickets at the cost of 86 runs, while Mahmudullah, Nazmul Islam Apu and Abu Jayed took one wicket each for two, 42 and 61 runs respectively.
