Zainul Abedin’s birth anniv celebrated

The Zainul Charukala Utsav on occasion of 105th birth anniversary of legendary artist Zainul Abedin, observed by Charukala Barishal at Ashwini Kumar Hall of the city with programmes of painting competition, discussion, exhibition on painting, folk arts and crafts, cultural function etc on Sunday.
The participants and visitors of the programme called the concerned authorities to observe the day as National Fine Arts Day on Sunday.
S M Ajiar Rahman, Deputy Commissioner Barishal, inaugurated the opening session of the festival on Sunday afternoon.
Altaf Hossain, President Charukala Barishal presided over this session addressed among others by Dipankar Chakraborty, former president of Charukala Barishal, Prof. Lutfey Alam, student of Joynul Abedin, Yusuf Hossain Kalu, language veteran.
A juvenile painting completion was held on this occasion and at evening BCC Mayor Serniabad Sadik Abdullah distributed prizes among the competitors.
This session was presided over by Sanaul Huq Chanu, vice president and convener of the festival and conducted by Rony Das, secretary of Charukala Barishal.
It was addressed among others by A H Toufiq Ahmed, divisional chief of UNICEF, Pankaj Roy Chowdhury, district children affairs officer, Saleh Mahmud Shelly, poet, Kajal Ghosh, Shuvangkar Chakraborty, cultural activists.
Cultural function was presented by Prantik Shilpi Goshthi.
Huge number of spectators visiting and enjoying the programmes opined that Zainul was well known for his leadership qualities in organising naïve artists and art activities in a place that had practically no recent history of institutional or professional art.
It was through the efforts of Zainul Abedin and a few of his colleagues that a tradition of Modern Art took shape in Bangladesh just within a decade.
For his artistic and visionary quality the title of Shilpacharya has been bestowed on him was justified and so his birth day would be observed as national fine arts day, they added.
