Youth dead, 3 policemen injured as criminals attempt to snatch associate

A young man was killed and three policemen were injured in a reported gunfight which ensued when a group of alleged criminals tried to snatch an arrestee from police custody in Teknaf upazila of Cox’s Bazar.
The deceased was identified as Khorshed Alam, 22, was the brother of the arrestee Shamsul Alam Prakash alias Kala Shamsu and a wanted man himself.
The incident took place around 10:30 pm on Tuesday at Mithapani Chhara of Teknaf Sadar union, confirmed Teknaf model police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Hafizur Rahman.
He said police on Tuesday night arrested Kala Shamsu, a wanted criminal and notorious drug dealer in the area.
On the way back to the police station, Shamsu’s men attacked the police in a bid to snatch Shamsu away. Police also fired back in self-defence. In the skirmish, Khorshed sustained a bullet injury and died before he was taken to the hospital.
Three police were also injured in the gunfight, said the police official. Injured policemen are, Assistant Sub-Inspector Ratan Miya, 31, Constable Shariful, 46, and Balram, 25.
Zakaria Mahmud, a doctor at the emergency department of Teknaf Upazila Health Complex, said a young man was brought in Tuesday night with a bullet wound to the left side of his chest. “He was declared dead on arrival. Meanwhile, three injured policemen were given first-aid and referred to Cox’s Bazar.”
OC Hafizur said the body has been sent to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.
Meanwhile, victim’s brother Nurul Alam claimed when Khorshed rushed to see his brother Shamsu after hearing of his arrest, he was shot by the police. “Khorshed was later rescued and taken to the hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.”
