Eunus Ali Akand, a Supreme Court lawyer, on Thursday filed a writ petition with the High Court (HC) seeking its directive on the Election Commission (EC) and government to form a judicial inquiry commission to investigate the alleged irregularities during the city corporation elections.
The elections of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) and Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) were held on April 28.
Awami League-backed candidates won the three mayoral posts in the elections with the BNP-backed candidates stepped away from the contests midway on the election day, alleging widespread vote rigging by the ruling party activists.
In the petition, Eunus Ali Akand sought the inclusion of retired judges in the judicial inquiry commission to conduct enquiry into the alleged irregularities.
He also requested the HC to issue a rule upon the EC and the government to explain why their alleged failure in holding the city corporation elections in a free and fair manner should not be declared illegal.
Referring to the media reports, the petitioner requested the court to make the EC, Chief Election Commissioner and Secretaries to the LGRD, Home and Law Ministries and Returning Officers of DNCC, DSCC and CCC respondents in the rule.
Later, Eunus Ali Akand told the media that he had submitted the writ for the interest of the people and he would place it before the designated HC bench for hearing soon.
Different countries and international organisations including the United States, United Kingdom and United Nations have reportedly demanded investigation into the alleged election-time irregularities.
