The hearing of about four thousand writ cases filed with the High Court Division of the Supreme Court on September 23 making more than three hundred thousand (Three lakh) BNP leaders and activists accused has been adjourned yesterday until today (Tuesday).
A High Court Bench comprising Justice Moinul Islam Chowdhury and Justice Md Ashraful Kamal heard the writ petition yesterday and then adjourned the hearing until today following an appeal of Deputy Attorney General (DAG) Akramul Haque Tutul seeking time.
The High Court Bench said that these sort of cases image of the police and credibility is destroyed. The court further says if such cases are filed against a lawyer of the status of Supreme Court’s senior lawyer Khondaker Mahbub Hossain, what message will go to the people ? During the hearing, the apex court raised this question.
In the beginning the court has observed the FIRs of some cases and made the adverse comments.
While addressing the court the DAG said, “He (Khandaker Mahbub Hossain) is not only a lawyer, He is holding a post of a political party.” At this stage the court said, “What did you say ? He cannot do politics, it is nowhere in law. Earlier, the lawyers were more involved in politics.”
Later, Dr Kamal Hosssain conducted the hearing. He was accompanied by Barrister Moudud Ahmad, Khondaker Mahbub Hossain, Advocate Md Masud Rana, Barrister AKM Ahsanur Rahman, Advocate Nitai Roy Chowdhury and others.
Advocate Masud Rana told the apex court, “About four thousand cases were lodged against BNP leaders and activists from September 1 to September 20 in different places of the country. People died 10 years ago were made accused in these cases. Besides, senior advocate Khandaker Mahbub was made accused in 3 or 4 cases in 34 days in a single place. He was charged with throwing cocktails in these cases. Anybody like him would go out to throw cocktail, is it believable ?
One who died in 2007 or one who was performing Hajj and one who live abroad have been made accused in the ghost cases”.
