A writ petition was filed with the High Court on Sunday challenging the legality of the two circulars appointing 70 Deputy Attorney Generals and 105 Assistant Attorney Generals for the Attorney General Office recently.
Farhad Uddin Ahmed Bhuiyan, a Supreme Court lawyer, filed the petition. The High Court bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Md Khairul Alam may hear the case, the lawyer said.
Ministry of law on July 7, 2019 appointed 105 Assistant Attorney Generals, and on July 21, 2019 appointed 70 Deputy Attorney Generals. The lawyer said in the petition, the law ministry appointed them violating the Bangladesh Law Officers Order 1972, amended as the Bangladesh Law Officers (Amendment) Act, 2001 and ignoring the spirit of the articles 19, 22, 27, 28, 29 and 31 of the Constitution of the country.
“Attorney General, Additional Attorney General, Deputy Attorney General and Assistant Attorney General and other law officers have been given appointment on political consideration overlooking the existing law and constitutional bindings,” read the petition.
