World Tourism Day observed with fervor

With the call of making tourism affordable to all, the government and private organisations on Tuesday observed the “World Tourism Day-2016” across the country with fervor and enthusiasm along with the globe.
Three-day long varieties of programmes, including seminars and rallies, were chalked out in the city and elsewhere in the country on the occasion by Bangladesh Tourism Board (BTB), Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation (BPC) and private entities.
As part of the programmes, a colorful rally was brought out centrally from Matsya Bhaban intersection at 8.30 am that concluded at TSC, Dhaka University (DU) after parading High Court and Doyel Chattar intersections.
Civil Aviation and Tourism secretary SM Ghulam Farooque inaugurated the rally. DU Vice-Chancellor Professor AAMS Arefin Siddique, BPC Chairman Dr Aparup Chowdhury, BTB Chief Executive Officer Akhtaruz Zaman Khan Kabir took part at the rally.
Besides, leaders of Tour Operations’ Association of Bangladesh (TOAB), Association of Travel Agents of Bangladesh (ATAB), Bangladesh Tourists Police, Aviation, Tourism Journalists Forum of Bangladesh (ATJFB) and other stakeholders also joined the rally.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh Tourism Board and Tourism and Hospitality Management Department of the DU cut a cake at the TSC to mark the day.
Later, a discussion was also held at the TSC auditorium where Prof Arefin spoke as the chief guest.
The theme of this year’s World Tourism Day was “Tourism for All – Promoting Universal Accessibility”. Discussion, cutting the cake, folk song, lighting at important building and hotels, special discount at food and accommodation in hotels and motels, debating competition, art competition and seminar, etc were also organised across the country.
In addition, special supplements were published in the national dailies while special programmes and documentaries are being on aired and broadcasted in Radio and Television. Moreover, President and Prime Minister have issued separate messages on the occasion of “World Tourism Day”.
According to the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC), in 2015, direct contribution of travel and tourism sector to national economy was Taka 402 billion which is 2.4 percent of GDP and it is expecting to stand at 5.2 percent in 2016.
