Bangladesh Red Crescent Society (BDRCS), International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRCS) on Saturday observed World First Aid Day amid festivity.
This year’s theme of the day is: ‘Be a Hero, Save Lives! First Aid is for Everyone, Everywhere.’
BMM Mozharul Huq, Secretary General, Bangladesh Red Crescent Society, was present as the chief guest at the inaugural ceremony held in the morning.
Releasing balloons and lifting festoons, Mozharul Huq announced the
daylong event and addressed volunteers, officials, movement partners and guests with a brief speech highlighting the importance of the day.
Members of managing committee of BDRCS, Head of Delegation of the ICRC, representatives from IFRCS, and partner national societies were also present.
The daylong programmes include street show and road drama in six key points in Dhaka city, leaflet distribution, talk-show and first aid competition involving Red Crescent youth to sensitise people about the importance of providing First Aid.
Besides, 68 district and city units have also observed the day with rally, discussion meeting and First Aid competition.
Hundreds of thousands of people are hurt or killed due to injuries every year due to inadequate response or lack of timely assistance.
Taking immediate action and applying the appropriate techniques while waiting for professional help, it is possible to considerably reduce deaths and injuries, and the impact of disasters and everyday emergencies.
Currently, BDRCS has nearly 85,000 trained Red Crescent members who are trained in First Aid. BDRCS has also been conducting Basic First Aid Training regularly to help people in need during emergency situation.
Besides, since October 2013 BDRCS volunteers with the support of ICRC are providing Basic First Aid and Medical Evacuation services in hospitals to the people injured during politically motivated violence.
BDRCS also works to sensitize people and relevant stakeholders so that the first-responders and medical personnel can carry out their activities unhindered during political violence, and that those involved respect Red Cross and Red Crescent emblems.
