Workers want public transport resumption

Transport workers demanded resumption of public transports and food assistance from a procession in the capital’s Sayedabad on Sunday.
Several hundred transport workers brought out a procession in Sayedabad area to press home their three-point demand, including to resumption of public transports while maintaining health protocols.
The workers under the banner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Road Transport Workers Union brought out the procession in the morning.
The workers chanting slogans saying while the markets are reopened than the transports also should be resumed.
Earlier on Saturday, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said the Bangladesh government is considering the resumption of public transport services in the country ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr.
The minister also urged transport owners and workers not to resort to protests over the issue.
“Be patient,” he told the aggrieved public transport owners and workers.
Public transport services were suspended in Bangladesh on April 5, when the government announced a countrywide lockdown to curb the spread of Covid-19.
On Friday, transport owners urged the government to immediately resume bus services. They also demanded food assistance for unemployed transport workers.
In a statement, the owners said anger is growing among public transport owners and workers over longtime suspension of public transport services which disrupting their livelihood severely.
