The breaking of old scrap ships has become a threat to the life of workers who are engaged for cutting ships without any safety measures in Chittagong.
One worker at a ship breaking yard was killed in an accident at Foujdarhat area in Chittagong on Monday. The ill fated victim is Shaheb Mian (45), a worker of K R Ship Breaking Yard owned by Kashem Raja.
Sitakunda thana police said that after completing the autopsy of the victim Shaheb Mian, the body was handed over to his family members. A case was filed in this connection.
Sources said, ship breaking industry starting since 1970 has been polluting the environment of the locality posing a serious threat to the health of the nearby residents. Around 40,000 workers are engaged in the ship breaking industries of Chittagong. A total of four types of old vessels are scrapped in the shipyards of Sitakunda.
