SEVEN or Saat in Bangla, a documentary play based on the real life stories of seven women rights activists from seven countries, is now revisiting Bangladesh.
The documentary, performed all over the world, has been translated into 25 languages.
The Swedish Embassy and UN Women are organising two performances of the play marking International Women’s Day. Its Bangla version is scheduled to be screened on Sunday (today) evening while the English one on Monday at 7pm at Chhayanaut Theater in Dhanmondi.
The English performance of SEVEN will be led by the diplomats and heads of agencies of Canada, America, Sri Lanka, Sweden, Norway, ILO, and Australia, said a press release.
It said the Bangla ensemble will include a mix of senior personalities from the private sector, government, civil society, and media.
A riveting piece of the documentary tells the true stories of seven women who bravely fought for the well-being of women, families, and children around the globe: in Russia, protecting women from domestic violence; in Cambodia, rescuing girls from human trafficking; in Guatemala, giving voice to the poor; in Afghanistan, empowering rural women; in Nigeria and Pakistan, fighting for women’s education and rights; and in Northern Ireland, promoting peace and equality.
It aims to bring women’s rights issues higher on the political and media agenda, raise awareness and engagement, and stimulate conversations about improving the status of women.
The play has been performed in more than 32 countries around the world. In Bangladesh, UN Women and the Swedish Embassy have used the play a few times in the past to generate discussion on the importance of ending violence against women.
Ambassador of Sweden in Dhaka Johan Frisell and Representative, UN Women Chris Hunter are expected to join both shows.
