A young housewife reportedly jumped off a hospital building after throwing her newborn child at Jail Road in the district town on Friday morning, killing both of them.
The deceased were identified as Shima Akhter, 25, wife of expatriate Monir Miah of Ghatiara village in Sadar upazila, and their three-day-old son.
Family sources said Shima was taken to Life Care Hospital on October 16 after she went into labour.
She gave birth to the baby boy through cesarean section on the day. She was scheduled to be discharged from the hospital on Friday morning.
Shima had an argument with her mother in the morning over paying the hospital bill, said attendants of other patients at the ward.
When her mother went outside after the brawl, the housewife along with her baby went to the rooftop of the six-storey building of a nearby hospital, threw her child and then jumped from the building, killing them on the spot.
Officer-in-Charge of Sadar Police Station Selim Uddin said prima facie it seemed that Shima committed suicide along with her child. “We’ve talked to the families of both Shima and her husband. There’s mismatch between the information. The reason behind the death could be known following further investigation,” he said.
