Miscreants killed an elderly woman as she along with her husband fell unconscious after they were fed sedative-laced food in the city’s Natun Jurain early Tuesday.
The deceased was identified as Samartho Begum, 65, wife of Mohammad Nurul Islam, 70.
The couple was residing on the ground floor of a two-storey building at 168/1, Natun Jurain in Alambagh of Kadamtoli police station.
Police quoting relatives of the victim said the couple, who owned the house, had been residing in the flat alone. They rented a room to one Abdur Razzak who remained missing since the incident came to light.
One of their female relatives, who resides on the 1st floor of the building, went to the ground floor at about 11:30 am and found the door of the flat closed from outside. As the relative unlocked the door latch and went inside the flat, she found the couple unconscious on their bed, said Sub-inspector Taher of Kadamtoli police station.
On information, a local doctor came to the house and declared Samartho Begum dead and Nurul Islam as unconscious. On the doctor’s advice, Nurul Islam was admitted to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), said SI Taher. The body of the woman has been sent to the DMCH morgue for autopsy.
