Muggers again active: Woman dies after falling off rickshaw during snatching bid

A woman died after falling from a rickshaw when muggers tried to snatch her bag on Biswa Road near Titipara mor in the city early Saturday.
The deceased was identified as Tarina Begum Lipi, 38, wife of Golam Kibria, hailed from Sylhet Sadar upazila. She along with family members came to Dhaka on February 24 to visit relatives at South Rajarbagh, police and relatives said.
Proloy Kumar Saha, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Mugda Police Station, said that the incident happened when Lipi and her family members were going to Kamalapur Railway Station to board a train to go to Sylhet.
Lipi suffered serious injuries after falling off the rickshaw when some muggers dragged her bag near Shaheed Mostafa Kamal Stadium near Titipara mor around 5:30am.
Lipi was first taken to Mugda General Hospital and from where she was shifted to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) as her condition deteriorated, the police official said.
Lipi succumbed to her injuries at DMCH around 6:45am, said the OC
Ali Ahmed, Sub-Inspector of Mugda Police Station, said that Lipa got injured falling from the rickshaw as a gang of muggers tried to snatch her bag when she along with her husband and two children was going to Kamalapur Railway Station.
The muggers hit her while he tried to resist the snatching, the SI said.
Lipi sustained fatal injuries to her head when a mugger from inside a white car, forcibly tugged at her bag, he added.
She later died from the injuries to her head, said Bachchu Mia, an Inspector of DMCH’s police outpost.
Meanwhile, Abdul Baten, Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, said that the muggers have become disparate in the city.
The drive against the armed muggers, terrorists and other criminal to be continued to ensure safety of the people, the police official said.  
Incidents of mugging have gone up significantly in and around the capital in the recent times despite the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) claims that it is paying special attention to combat such crimes, a Bangladesh Railway staff in Kamalapur claimed.
Earlier on June 11 in 2018, muggers killed two young men in separate incidents, in which one of the victim’s was shot and the other stabbed, in the capital’s Demra and Sabujbagh areas.
The dead were identified as Rashidul Islam, 22, and Rahat, 23.
