A woman committed suicide by hanging herself with ceiling fan after allegedly strangulating her two-year old daughter to death over family feud in their tin-roofed house in the city’s Sabujbagh on Tuesday morning.
The deceased were identified as Shantona Begum, 22, and her child Mahfuza, daughter of Mamun near Ahmedbagh Community Center under Sabujbagh thana, police said.
Abul Kuddus Fakir, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sabujbagh Police Station, said “Shantona might have committed suicide in the morning as her husband eloped with her younger sister two days ago.”Being informed by locals around 8:00am on Tuesday, police broke into the house and found Shantona hanging and Mahfuza lying on the floor. Later, they were rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) where doctors declared them dead, the police official said.
On Janury 2, an extramarital affair developed between Shantona’s sister Sarna, who had been staying in their house, and her husband Mamun, said relatives of the deceased.
