The High Court (HC) on Monday asked why corruption and bribery are taking place even after the government has doubled the salary and other facilities of its officials.
Corruption must be removed from the country anyhow, said the HC bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice KM Hafizul Alam while hearing a Suo Moto rule over the legality of the government’s inaction to stop running unfit vehicles.
“The country has been made independent 48 years ago with a dream that there will be no corruption in the country and rule of law will be established in the republic. If rule of law is not established, the country will not be developed and cannot go forward,” the court said.
All the people will have to work honestly and sincerely and the country will have to be brought under the discipline, it added.
“We urge the authorities concerned to awaken their conscience in order to bring discipline in the transport management so that accidents do not take place” Justice Nazrul Islam said. The Prime Minister is working hard to bring discipline in every sector of the country, the HC bench said.
All the people concerned should work with honesty and patriotism to assist the Prime Minister in achieving her goal, it added.
The HC bench ordered the BRTA to submit a list in the court with the names of the owners of the buses which were registered but have no fitness. At the same time, the court also sought the list of the names of the bus drivers who have driving license but not renewed.
The Court also sought a report from the BRTA within a month about the steps taken under the BRTA Act against these vehicles and drivers and fixed July 23 for further order on the issue.
Director of Road Safety Division of BRTA Mahbub E Rabbani appeared in the court yesterday and the court heard him.
Advocate Moin Feroj and Advocate Rafiul Islam appeared in the court on behalf of BRTA, while Deputy Attorney General A K M Aminuddin Manik and Assistant Attorney General Helena Begum Chaina appeared in the court for the State.
Advocate Moin Feroj submitted a report in the court on behalf of BRTA Director Mahbub E Rabbani.
The report said, the number of vehicles which have license but no fitness is 4 lakh 58 thousand 369. This number is One lakh 68 thousand 308 only in Dhaka.
The HC issued a Suo Moto rule on March 27, 2019 following a report published under the banner of “no fitness docs, yet running”.
