AL, BNP observe democracy preservation, cilling day

The district and city units of ruling Awami League and their political rival BNP observed democracy preservation and demolition day peacefully on Tuesday.The counter rallies were observed in front of the respective party offices situated within 200 yards distances in the city center amid strong vigilances of law enforcing agencies. The rallies of city and district unit AL were addressed among others by city secretary Advocate Afzalul Karim and district secretary Advocate Talukdar Md. Yunus MP and leaders of font organisations at Sohel Square of the city and a procession on city roads. The programme of BNP was observed at Ashwini Kumar Hall premises addressed among others by central Organising Secretary and city BNP president Mojibor Rahman Sarwar.

17 fined for smoking in public place

KISHOREGANJ: A mobile court in a drive fined 17 people for smoking in public on the premises of the Deputy Commissioner’s office and Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court in the district town on Tuesday noon. During the drive, the mobile court fined each person Tk50 for smoking in open places violating the existing law against smoking in public. Additional Deputy Commissioner Torofdar Mohammad Aktar Jamil and executive magistrate Abu Taher Sayeed confirmed the incident, reports UNB.

Youth killed in Manikganj road accident

MANIKGANJ: A motorcyclist was killed as he fell into a roadside ditch with his vehicle at Boali in Shibaloya upazila early Tuesday. The deceased was identified as Saifur Rahman Kajol, 23, son of Saidur Rahman, a resident of Shibaloya upazila. Police said Kajol was returning home from Arichaghat early Tuesday by riding a motorcycle. When he reached Boali, his speeding bike hit with a roadside tree as he lost the control over the steering and plunged into a ditch. In the morning, local people spotted him lying severely injured and whisked him off to a hospital where on-duty doctors declared him dead. Officer-in-charge of Shibaloya Police Station Rakibuzzaman confirmed the incident, reports UNB.

2 killed in Bagerhat bike crash

BAGERHAT: Two people were killed and three others injured in a head-on collision between two motorcycles on the Bagerhat-Morelganj road at Dona in Morelganj upazila on Tuesday morning. The deceased were identified as Chinmoy Haldar, 40, son of Hironmoy Haldar, a resident of Kalai village in Jia Nagar upazila of Pirojpur district, and Hafiz Mollah, 35, son of Idris Mollah of Balaibunia village in Morelganj upazila. Chinmoy Haldar was a teacher of a government primary school in Zia Nagar, reports UNB.

4 drug peddlers held in Pirojpur

PIROJPUR: Detectives in separate drives arrested four men along with one kg hemp and 50 pieces of yaba tablets from Sadar and Zianagar upazilas on Sunday night. In Sadar upazila, a team of the detective branch (DB) of police, led by sub-inspector Mohammad Hasnain Parvej, conducted a drive in Chalitakhali village and arrested alleged drug peddler Bikram Sheikh along with hemp at night. Police also arrested his wife Anwara Begum and associate Firoz. Meanwhile, detectives in another drive arrested an alleged drug peddler, identified as Mamun, along with 50 pieces of yaba tablets from Chandipur village of Zianagar upazila at night. Police super Mohammad Walid Hossain briefed about the arrest on Monday morning, reports UNB.
