‘Jatiya Oikyafront’s Convener Dr Kamal Hossain on Thursday said, “The ruling party has made the country a jungle. Even, worse than the jungle. They have gone crazy.”
Addressing the Law Minister, he said, “Barrister Mainul got bail from High Court. Then why he is in jail, why, why? We want answer from the Law Minister. In which ground he (Barrister Mainul) was sent to jail? You (Law Minister) speak about democracy, and now give us the answer. In a defamation case, we have got bail in three times. Then why he is in jai?”
He was speaking as the chief guest at a general meeting of ‘Jatiya Ainjibi Oikyafront’ organized on the Supreme Court premises in Dhaka on Thursday.
“There is no country in the world where a Prime Minister orders to file cases against a citizen of the country. We have passed 47 years of our independence. Never thought that I have to see such a situation in the country. It is a big punishment for me to see such a situation,” the veteran politician said.
“People of the country are now united against the injustice and in favour of justice. Lawyers are also united. Those who live in the fool’s paradise don’t see it,” he said.
He said, “We raised seven point demands including dissolving the Parliament before the election. The present Prime Minister also demanded these points in 2006. We are not asking anything out of it. Those are the precondition of a fair election.”
Jatiya Ainjibi Oikyafront’s Convener and also the President of Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) Advocate Zainul Abedin presided over the meeting and Ainjibi Oikyafront’s Member-Secretary and also SCBA’s Secretary Barrister A M Mahbub Uddin Khokan conducted it.
Barrister Moudud Ahmed, Advocate Khandker Mahbub Hossain, Advocate Subrata Chowdhury, Advocate Nitay Roy Chowdhury,
Advocate Abdur Rezzak Khan, Advocate Moazzem Hossain Alal, Advocate Masud Ahmed Talukder, Advocate Sanaullah Miah, Advocate Golam Mostofa Khan, Bikalpa Dhara’s Secretary Advocate Shah Mohammad Badol, Advocate S M Kamal Uddin, Dr Goribe Newaz, among others, gave speech at the meeting.
Advocate Zainul Abedin announced some demands at the end of the meeting. These are-all political prisoners, including BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, should be released before the election schedule, the sentences against Tarique Rahman should be canceled, Barrister Mainul Hosein should be released, people will have to return the right to vote, an election-time neutral government should be formed after dissolving the Parliament and interference in the judiciary should be stopped.
He said that they would form branch committees of ‘Jatiya Ainjibi Oikyafront’ in the district bars very soon and then they will organize a grand rally.
Barrister Moudud Ahmed said, “The government is upset with the formation of Jatiya Oikayfront. Now their defeat in a fair election is inevitable. We needed a unity and that have been achieved.”
Advocate Khandker Mahbub Hossain said, “The government is sitting on the burning volcano. So, they do not know what they have to do. The people of the country are united with the leadership of Dr Kamal Hossain and we are ready to go even in jail.”
“After the Prime Minister’s remarks, police arrested Barrister Mainul Hosein. He is kept in jail like an ordinary prisoner without division facility though he is the former President of the Supreme Court Bar Association and a former Member of the Parliament. He is sick in jail. We want justice of it,” Khandker Mahbub also said.
Advocate Subrata Chowdhury said, “The present government has made the judiciary into a loyal judiciary. We can’t accept it. They have made the whole country a big prison.”
