Staff Reporter :
The High Court (HC) on Tuesday wanted to know when effective medicine for eliminating mosquitoes would arrive in the country.
The court directed the authorities of the two city corporations of Dhaka to inform this court in this regard by Thursday.
The HC bench of Justice Tariq ul Hakim and Justice Md Shohrowardi passed the order during hearing of a Suo Moto rule.
The court also expressed dissatisfaction over ineffectiveness of medicine for mosquito control amid the outbreak of dengue fever in Dhaka and across the country.
During yesterday’s hearing, the court also asked the authorities of the two city corporations as to why the existing medicine has not been effective in controlling mosquito menace.
City corporations’ lawyer Barrister Taufiq Inam Tipu told the court that the authorities have advertised for importing more effective medicine for mosquito control from China.
Hopefully, the new medicine will arrive in the country within two weeks, the lawyer said.
Earlier on July 17, the High Court came down heavily on the city corporations of Dhaka for failure to control mosquito menace in the capital even after it (the HC) passed orders for taking necessary steps to this effect.
The HC directed the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) to take appropriate action against the people involved in corruption over purchase and import of ineffective medicines for mosquito control in Dhaka after conducting an enquiry against them.
It also ordered the two city corporations to import effective medicine with assistance from the government on an emergency basis and to take necessary measures to prevent the mosquito menace.
The HC also directed the DNCC and DSCC to submit separate reports to this court after complying with the directives by August 20 and also fixed August 20 for passing further order on this issue.
