What makes a good manager

Dr Md.Aminul Islam Swapon :
Does the manager mean having premium chair of the office? Calling bell, lavish car, so many office boys? Boss has his Boss above him. You are not above rules and regulations. You’re the boss. Well, nevertheless, it can be very difficult being a boss who is not respected, ineffective at managing staff, or even actively disliked. I am working with the spinning mills as an adviser (planning and admin). So my experience expressed as an article could be helpful in a smaller, more casual setting. Even though the tips could be useful to a person in a larger, more formal executive setting.
Developing trust and conveying appreciation to your employees-it could be all it takes to become the best manager you wish to be! Some managers inspire and motivate, but many fail miserably to engage their employees. Some run a highly effective team, yet the employees under them live and work in fear.
Manager must be impartial. Ideal manager must be honest, patient and attentive. He must value his or her employees because the profit directly depends on the people who work there. He should listen to other workers and encourage to work hard for the betterment of the organization. I think a good manager should be able to make his people enjoy the work they are doing and encourage their diligence.
Another fundamental quality that makes a good manager is the capacity of judging equally all the subordinates, In short, he has to be perfectly knowledgeable about the tasks he’s working. He should be ever-vigilant on the employees and working as a co-worker not as a barrier.
Good managers are professional; deal with problems immediately. Never hope a problem will magically go away, or that someone else will deal with it. Deal with every issue swiftly, no matter how small. Good people are good managers or efficient managers are leaders- this idea may not always be true.
In short, he inspires others to achieve their dreams: by words, by actions, and most significantly, by example. There are a few guidelines you should follow to be the best possible manager.
Here follows some Do’s and Don’ts for a good manager.
 Some Do’s :
Managers should:
o encourage employees to achieve the goal.
o arrange training to develop employees efficiency.
o share with your subordinates and higher officers for finding errors before making a plan.
o  listen patiently from their employees.
o  be capable of bringing out the possible problem-resolving answer from the employees.
o analyze the result of the works and give them feed-back if necessary.
o know the strong sides of the employees and set them in appropriate manner.
o say thanks to the subordinates for their good works.
o help build confidence and trust-worthy relation with the group.
o come forward soon after a temporary difficulty comes up.
o be honest and maintain decency in conversation, dress and conduct.
o integrate the work-force in the jobs by incorporating innovative ideas.
o work with positive belief and inspire others.
o be capable of taking quick and right decision and learn on somebody’s mistakes.
Finally, we should find the real manager who prepares a second man who would be worthy of running the group or organization smoothly in absence of him.
Some Don’ts:
Managers should not:
o make employees live in fear of him.
o  discourage the group working under him nor should he fail to appreciate if deemed necessary.
o say “I myself did it” for the good job nor should he say “you did it” for the wrongs done if any.
o  devalue what the employees’ deserve .
o  speak continuously at the meeting nor forbid the employees to express their opinion .
o take for granted that his opinion will always be accepted and nod everyone’s head in the positive in ratification of his work.
o change his decision, aim and view frequently.
o  put pressure on subordinates unnecessarily nor illegally.
o  behave in an unfriendly manner nor should he be bossing around with his subordinates, i.e. should not ask about their future plan and about their family and relatives as well.
o  behave in a prejudiced manner nor indulge in favoritism, nepotism and regionalism.
o  think that women are weak nor give them more emphasis.
o  avoid the employees outside of the office.
o  break his promise.
o  phone on holidays to discuss about official matters nor abuse on the phone.
o  have dissimilarity between words and works.
o  downgrade a senior employee in front of a junior employee.
Good managers possess qualities that may not show up on paper but always show up where it matters most — in the minds and even hearts of the people they lead.
