The city dwellers heaved a sigh of relief on Saturday as thundershowers lashed the capital in the evening, breaking the three week-long sweltering heat.
A cool breeze was blowing through the capital following the light rain.
The Met office could not record the rainfall accompanied by strong winds even as other parts of the country also saw similar thundershowers. Met office predicted more thundershowers in some parts of the country, including the capital, during the next 48 hours.
It has also recorded one mm rainfall in Mymensingh yesterday afternoon. Met officials attributed the sudden change in weather to nor’wester, a local storm that produces lightning and thunder. They said it is a temporary phenomenon, which normally occurs during summer afternoons and lasts an hour or two due to ground heating, availability of moisture and instability in the atmosphere.
Saturday’s highest temperature was recorded in Chuadanga at 41.9 degrees Celsius. The mercury has been between 37 and 40 degrees Celsius during the period of last one week.
The Met office said some parts of the country, including Dhaka, Comilla, Barisal, Sylhet, Faridpur and Madaripur, cooled down a little since 3 pm yesterday.
People of Bhola, Narayanganj, Comilla and Moulvibazar experienced light rain yesterday, bringing much-needed relief from the heat wave sweeping across the country.
According to the Met office, two mm rainfall was recorded in Bhola but they could not record rainfall in Narayanganj and Moulvibazar as they did not have equipment there.
