Campus Report :
Although Bangabandhu did not directly declare the independence of Bangladesh in his speech on March 7, but he told the people to be ready to face an impending war. He urged the country men, to “Build forts from house to house”, “This time’s struggle is for liberation and this time’s struggle is for freedom”. His declaration gathered and inspired the Bengalis for the war of liberation by invigorating and uniting them against Pakistani oppression. The speakers were speaking all these at a webinar organized by the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication (JMC) of Daffodil International University on December 6, 2020. The title of the webinar was “Bangabandhu-Lincoln Speech: A Political Communication Analysis”. It was broadcasted live on DIU Campus TV. Former Chief Information Commissioner of Bangladesh and Adviser of JMC Department Prof Dr Golam Rahman was present at the webinar as the chif guest while Deputy Press Secretary to the Prime Minister Sakhawat Moon was present as the special guest. Dr Sheikh Shafiul Islam, Head, Department of JMC presided over the webinar. The webinar was conducted by Dr Tawfiq Elahi, Assistant Prof of JMC and also addressed by JMC students Meherab Rafi and Sharmin Nishu.
In according of the strategy and tactics of political communication, the speakers discussed two historical speeches of the world. The two speeches are: March 7 speech of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Gettysburg speech of former US President Abraham Lincoln.
Prof Dr Golam Rahman said, “Bangabandhu could have declared independence in his speech on March 7. But if it had been announced then the Pakistani rulers could have started to kill Bengalis on this pretext. Bangabandhu was a very tactful politician. That is why he did not declare independence at that moment, but called on the people to be fully prepared for the coming war. ” He also said, “Bangabandhu created the context for the declaration of independence through the call to be ready with what one has, build forts from house to house … etc.
Deputy Press Secretary to the Prime Minister Sakhawat Moon said, “Bangabandhu did not write anything before to deliver his speech. But in a short time, he said the most important things to the people at that time. “
Sakhawat Moon said, Bangabandhu has laid more emphasis on economic independence of the people. Because only economic independence can ensure real freedom and liberation of the people.
