Prominent Nazrul exponent Sudhin Das passed away at a city hospital Tuesday night. He was 87.
The noted singer breathed his last at Apollo Hospitals Ltd around 8:20pm on Tuesday, said family sources.
He left behind his wife singer Nilima Das and only daughter Suporna. His only son Niloy was a prominent guitarist who died few years ago.
Sudhin Das was taken to a private clinic at Kalyanpur in the morning after he caught fever and vomited. He was later admitted to the Apollo Hospitals.
The body will be kept at the Central Shaheed Minar at 11:00am and at Nazrul Institute at 10:00am on Thursday so that people from all walks of life can pay their last respects to Sudhin Das. His body will be cremated at Postogola, the family sources told The New Nation.
Meanwhile, Cultural Affairs Minister Asaduzzaman Noor expressed deep shock at the death of Sudhin Das. In a condolence message, he prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed his sympathy to the bereaved family.
Sudhin Das spent his full life to music. He was born in Comilla’s Talpukurpar’s Bagichagaon in 1930. He was a student of Comilla Zila School and Victoria College. But he couldn’t finish BA degree because he spent more time to music. He had also fascination about playing chess during that time. His paternal grandfather Suren Das was his first mentor in music.
On March 8 in 1948, Sudhin Das first rendered song in Pakistan Betar. By this way he started his music career. In 1954-55, Nazrul’s songs for the first time were treated as Nazrul Geeti in Pakistan Radio. By this way Nazrul’s songs became popular among all. He started to preserve Swaralipi of Nazrul’s songs. In 1982, for the first time Nazrul Academy published first part of Nazrul’s songs under Sudhin Das’ initiative. He has a lot of continuation for the development and preservation of Nazrul songs.
