Bagerhat Correspondent :
Due to the strong current of the rivers accompanied with incessant and torrential rains embankments constructed in Bagerhat district by the Water Development Board ( WDB) in order to protect the area from flood and water surge were broken at several points.
By this time some 510 meters of the embankments have already collapsed at 7 points of 5 Upazilas of the district. Not only that but also, 60 kilometers embankments are in great risky at different points in those Upazilas.
It is apprehended by the villagers that if the necessary steps are not taken immediately to repair the damaged embankments water surge may enter within the embankments and consequently, a large number of villages may be inundated.
On the other hand, people who are living in the river sides of the affected embankments are demanding repair of them (the damaged embankments) without any delay.
Bagerhat WDB sources said , following the continuous and heavy downpour and strong waves and currents of the rivers embankments under Bagerhat Sadar, Mollahat, Chitalmari, Morrelganj and Rampal Upazilas (excluding Sharankhola Upazila) of the district began to be eroded at 7 points. Out of them 50 meters at Kuliadair point, 60 meters at Radhaballava point and 70 meters at Bisnupur point on the bank of the river Bhairab under Bagerhat Sadar Upazila,100 meters at Khegrghat ferry ghat point on the bank of the river Bisna under Rampal Upazila, 50 meters at Kumariajola point on the bank of the river Panguci under Morrelganj Upazila, 150 meters at Paranpur point on the bank of the river Madhumati and 30 meters at Astail point on the bank of the river Madhumati under Mollahat Upazila.
