WB partnered with govt to ameliorate livelihoods of poor

In a bid to improve the livelihoods of approximately five million extreme poor and poor people of the rural areas of Bangladesh, the Government of Bangladesh (GoB) signed US$ 200 million financing agreement with the World Bank (WB) for the ‘Nuton Jibon Livelihood Improvement Project (NJLIP)’ recently, says a press release.
It will be implemented by Social Development Foundation (SDF) under Bank and Financial Institutions Division of Ministry of Finance.
Whilst the financial agreement was signed between Kazi Shofiqul Azam, Additional Secretary, Economic Relations Divisions (ERD), Ministry of Finance on behalf of GoB and Christine E. Kimes, Acting Country Director, World Bank Dhaka Office being the counterpart, a project agreement has also been signed by AZ M Sakhawat Hossain, Managing Director of SDF, the implementing agency and Christine E Kimes, Acting Director of WB on their respective behalf at the same signing ceremony held on 5th May 2015 at NEC II Conference room of ERD located at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Dhaka.
The ‘Nuton Jibon Livelihood Improvement Project (NJLIP) is scheduled to be launched in July 2015 for a period of six years with a budget envelope of US$220 where GoB will provide US$20 million in addition to the IDA credit of US$200. With the project development objective ‘to improve livelihoods of the poor and extreme poor in the project areas’, the NJLIP will cover around 2,500 new villages in 12 districts in addition to the 3,200 villages supported under the earlier projects.
